When did Artistic Swimming become an Olympic sport?

Artistic swimming (previously Synchronized Swimming) has been an Olympic sport since 1984.  Donella Freeman (Burridge) and Lisa Critoph were the first Australian synchronised swimmers competing at the 1984 LA Olympics.  Donnella is still competing to this day in the Masters catergory.

Artistic Swimming requires a combination of swimming skills, a sense of timing, spatial awareness, and visualisation.

All that beginners need is a competent level of swimming ability and no issues with being submerged under the water.
